National Course on Educational Sciences for Teachers of Health Professionals

The first National Teacher Training Centre (NTTC) was established in the year 1975 at JIPMER as part of the World Health Organization’s initiative to promote a global training program for medical teachers on Educational Science and Technology and with financial support from WHO. The first National Course on Educational Science for Teachers of Health Professionals was held in March 1976. The National Courses on Educational Science for Teachers of Health Professionals have been regularly held twice a year during the months of February and September.

So far 74 such National Courses have been conducted and a total of 1800 participants from across 22 states and UTs and 4 Asian nations have been trained. The purpose of these National Courses is to empower medical teachers to make medical education skill oriented and need-based and also to help in setting up or improving Medical Education Units / Departments in their own institutions. Since the discontinuation of grant-in-aid from WHO in the year 1999, the National Teacher Training Centre has been upgraded to the Department of Medical Education and the financial support for conducting the National Courses is provided by JIPMER.

The National Teacher Training Centre, JIPMER and the Department of Medical Education, JIPMER have also provided consultancy services for establishment of Medical Education Units in several medical colleges (Raja Muthiah Medical College, Chidambaram; Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum; Kasturba Medical College, Manipal; Medical Colleges at Trivandrum, Vishakhapatnam and Coimbatore) and for development of Master Trainers for Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University, Chennai. Training of Trainers (TOT) workshops for health services development projects of Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and West Bengal have also been conducted.

MCI Regional Centre for Faculty Development Programmes

The Department of Medical Education has been recognized by MCI as a Regional Centre for Faculty Development Programmes since March 2015. Hence, the Department of Medical Education has to conduct four MCI Basic Course workshop in Medical Education Technologies and four ATCOM (Attitude and Communication Module) sensitization programme in an academic year for the faculty members of 23 MCI recognized medical colleges allocated for JIPMER.

Interns orientation Programme

The Department of Medical Education is regularly organizing 'Interns Orientation Program on quality care' for the interns of the main batch and the additional batch interns every year in January and July respectively.

Postgraduate Orientation Programme in Research Methodology

The Postgraduate Orientation Program on Communication, Ethics and Research Methodology is regularly conducted for the I year and III year postgraduates of MD/MS, DM/MCh, Ph.D. and MSc programmes.

Other corporate works

The Department of Medical Education has been helping the administration with the preparation of JIPMER Annual Report which is being regularly placed in both the Houses of Parliament since FY 2009-10 and in the preparation of Results Framework Document (RFD) of JIPMER which is being submitted to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare regularly since 2010-11.

The Department of Medical Education conducts motivation programmes for all levels of employees of JIPMER as part of SMART JIPMER initiative.

Since 2013 the Department of Medical Education celebrates Teacher's Day every year to honor the retired teachers of JIPMER.
